About a decade has passed since the last ABC Friends Group was established in Victoria.
Although the group will be based in Shepparton, its inception would not have been possible without the intervention of Echuca’s own Wilma Hills.
During the official launch on Thursday, February 19 at the Shepparton campus of La Trobe University, Ms Hills’ efforts to create the group were acknowledged.
The group’s convenor, Robert McLean, explained to the more than 50 people at the launch that Ms Hills’ influence began in Bendigo when ABC Friends Victoria had attempted to set up a new group in that city.
She had been the only person to attend both Bendigo meetings, and with insufficient interest there, it was decided to pivot to Echuca and introduce the idea to people via a webinar.
However, the electronic gremlins were afoot and the only person who could access the webinar was Mr McLean, and so attention then shifted to Shepparton.
After a couple of preliminary public meetings in the city’s library, the small group of volunteers set up ABC Friends Goulburn Valley.
The new group covers a large part of Northern Victoria, including the City of Greater Shepparton and the shires of Campaspe, Moira and Strathbogie.

Shepparton-based ABC announcer Nic Healey, was the emcee at the launch, while former ABC Melbourne personality Jon Faine was the guest speaker.
ABC supporters listened intently as Mr Faine reminisced about his time as an announcer at the Melbourne studio of the national broadcaster.
However, he not only talked about years gone by; Jon discussed the ABC of today, boldly wading into matters currently troubling the corporation.
President and vice-president of ABC Friends Victoria, Pamela Creed and Michael Henry, respectively, were also among the evening's guests.
Fellow ABC Friends GV member Chris Parnell wrapped up the evening by thanking all who attended.
ABC Friends GV members Chris Uren, Judi Hanlon and Ray Pearson also helped ensure the launch went smoothly in the background.
More than 20 people completed provided forms at the launch, indicating support for the idea, and plans are being made for the group’s first post-launch meeting on March 19 at Shepparton Library.
