Data from the Australian Photovoltaic Institute reveals 41 per cent of homes in Greater Shepparton now have rooftop solar installed, placing the city ahead of metropolitan areas such as Boroondara and Monash, where uptake is about 27 per cent, and Whitehorse at 25 per cent.
The figures highlight a clear regional advantage, with Shepparton among the strongest performers in Victoria.
Neighbouring Goulburn Valley councils also report high adoption, reinforcing the region’s reputation as an enthusiastic supporter of rooftop solar energy.
A Solar Victoria spokesperson said regional communities such as Shepparton had led the way, with more than 30 per cent of the state’s Solar Homes rebates and loans taken up outside metropolitan Melbourne.
Experts say practical considerations were driving Shepparton’s strong uptake.
Senior research fellow at UNSW Mike Roberts said regional homes typically had larger roof space and higher electricity use, making solar a more attractive investment.
Goulburn Valley Community Energy chief executive Geoff Lodge said the region’s strong solar resource and clear financial returns were key motivators.
“People are doing the sums and seeing real benefits,” Mr Lodge said.
“Solar is delivering practical and economic advantages for households in Shepparton.”
