In the over 45s clash, the EMUs went down by a few goals to a very big and strong Gisborne side in a hard-fought contest that was played in great spirits throughout.
Despite the result, there were plenty of positives, particularly through the ruck where Richter and Ollie, not insignificant in height themselves, battled manfully against a towering opponent, giving away significant height.
Up forward, Brett Smith was a standout, finishing with four goals in a strong individual performance. Through the midfield, Van Poeteren, O’Connor, Dean and Corey Mitchell and Battiscombe worked tirelessly all day, matching Gisborne’s intensity at the contest.
In defence, O’Brien was kept busy under constant pressure, repelling numerous forward entries and holding firm in the back half.
The over 35s fell agonisingly short, going down by a few points in a highly competitive and tense encounter.
They can take plenty of pride from their performance against a much younger side and had it not been for a couple of missed opportunities late in the game, the result could have easily gone in favour of the EMU's.
Veitch was outstanding, influencing the game both through the midfield and up forward, earning best-on-ground honours for his efforts.
In defence, Christie and Elliott combined superbly, reading the play well and intercepting multiple Gisborne attacks.
Elso impressed with a standout display, his fitness proving a major asset across the ground, while Arnott was consistently involved through the midfield, winning plenty of the football and providing drive for the EMUs.
Goal kickers - Jurey kicked 3 and Elso, Veitch, Christie, Thompson and Retallick all chipped in with single goals.
Despite the results not falling their way, both EMUs sides demonstrated resilience and strong teamwork across the day.
Coach, Lucas Walker, praised the efforts of both teams, highlighting their commitment to his game plan and the positive spirit in which the games were played.
The EMUs will look to build on these early season performances when their season continues in three weeks after the Easter break.
Training is every Wednesday evening starting at 6pm at South Oval in Echuca.
