The program was led by Sue Milgate in a new role at ERH and participants were trained by GoTAFE Shepparton in the nationally accredited course.
The nine months of training was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, with training moved between interactive class room discussions to virtual online study mode, breaking out into group learning scenarios.
Staff from six regional health services including Echuca, Cohuna, Kerang, Swan Hill, Kyabram and Numurkah/Cobram represented multiple disciplines within the health sector from dental, allied health, ward clerks, ANUMs, registered nurses, finance and administration.
In addition, emerging leaders from the Campaspe Shire and Murray River Council completed the leadership and management training.
ERH Director of Education Cath Lees said the health service was committed to supporting and developing its current and emerging leaders.
“Our partnership with GoTAFE to deliver accredited leadership and management training at our health service has been a fabulous initiative embraced by a number of rural and outer regional health services,” Dr Lees said.
“My congratulations go out to all that completed the course throughout such trying times, and look forward to supporting their continual career growth and development in the future.”
The skills and tools leaders obtained from the training included innovative ways of developing and leading their workplace relationships, understanding emotional intelligence to support a team environment and an individual’s emotional triggers, determining best practice to lead performance, innovation, effective communication and people management.
With the ability to plan operationally and strategically, the participants were able to apply relevant industry context to their practical program with projects and assignments integrated into their organisational roles.
Future leadership programs are in the pipeline for 2022 to expand the support for emerging leaders throughout regional health services.
