Swans skipper Shaun Haffenden won the toss and opted to bat, with his side looking to improve on last weekend’s capitulation to Rochester.
Nondies recruit Peter Moore struck early with the wickets of South openers Aaron Carver and Clayton Watson, bringing Echuca South recruit Mitch McMullan to the crease.
McMullan (20) steadied the innings, but fell to Xavier Wishart who off seven overs concluded his spell with economical figures of 3-4.
South slumped to 7-56, but resistance down the order from Cameron Hay (29), Kaydn Blachford (21) and Ben Eade (13) ensured the Swans crawled their way to 122.
McMullan struck with the ball to claim the early scalp of Nondies skipper Rhys Bradley, but a steadying 52-run partnership between Sam O’Shea and Patrick Doyle kept the run chase flowing.
Eade and Haffenden dismissed both batters in quick succession to revitalise the Swans’ bowling attack.
Josh Novoselek’s return to Echuca South Reserve came to a swift end on four runs, followed quickly by Moore, to leave Nondies teetering at 5-74 and the Swans threatening to break through.
McMullan made it 6-86 with the wicket of Daniel Cooke, but hopes of an unlikely Swans victory were quashed with Nondies’ Will O’Shea and Wishart guiding the league newcomers to their first win of the season seven wickets down.
Looking forward, Echuca South faces Moama while Nondies-Cohuna travels to BLU.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Xavier Wishart was near unplayable on Saturday, keeping the clamps on Echuca South with 3-4 off seven, just pipping Sam O’Shea (2-24 and 28) for man of the match honours.
