The challenge involved setting a goal of how many kilometres each participant would like to achieve in the 28 days of February.
Most individuals in the group opted to take on the challenge of swimming 20km in one month.
Everyone in the team met their goal and some even opted to increase their goal, during the challenge, to 30 or even 50km.
Christy O’Brien, an Echuca Barracuda and super swimmer, said the group had enjoyed participating in the challenge.
They have realised, through the super swim, that they have quite the competitive side.
“We’ve really enjoyed being able to take on the competition by swimming in the river, which is a pretty unique way to do it.”
She explained that it had been difficult for a lot of people across Australia to finish the challenge with the results that they wanted to achieve.
“A lot of people in flood-affected areas haven’t been able to finish their goal and there’s also been people who have had to isolate as well, so that has been a bit tricky for some people who put their hands up to take on the challenge.”
“At the end of the day it’s not about whether you finish the challenge, it’s really about how much you can raise.”
The Barracudas have placed seventh in Australia for the amount of money that they have raised to help sick children in need.
So far, $11,988 has been collectively raised by the Barracudas.
“We had so many generous donations including $2000 from the Moama Bowling Club and from complete strangers who heard me on the nationwide Australia All Over radio program on Sunday morning,” Ms O’Brien said.
“We want to thank everyone who’s donated, it’s all very (well) to commit to a challenge but you need the support of everybody pitching in and donating.”
“We’ve had some amazing donations, very generous donations, even some up to $500 from individual people.”
“Even if it was just 20 bucks, it all adds up and it’s for such a great cause — sick kids.”
Ms O’Brien said that not only was the challenge for a good cause but it also means that the Barracudas get to do something that they love, which is swimming.
“I am absolutely going to sign up next year.”
Donations can be still be made up until Sunday, March 6. For more information, visit https://superswim.org.au/t/barracudas
