The Rochester premiership win came on its home rink, only 62 ends required to claim the victory as it led by an unassailable nine shots with one end remaining in the match.
Both teams agreed to calling it a day and the home rink party started for Rochester, which almost completed a premiership double as its division 4a team was beaten on the final end of its match with Moama.
Echuca produced the most memorable end of the grand final, but the extraordinary seven-shot feat of Steven McCartney’s rink went unrewarded as the team was an overall loser, 58-49.
McCartney and his three lead bowlers have been dominant this season and on grand final day they were 26-11 winners opposite Brian Trengrove. The seven-shot haul came on the 15th end of the match which they had led by only three after 12 ends.
Trengrove got to within nine shots with two ends remaining, but McCartney took six shots on the final two ends to blow the result out again.
The 15-shot win was almost immediately followed by the 12-shot win of John Weeks, who dominated Wally Fehring early — to the tune of a 16-3 lead after 12 ends.
Weeks won all but five of the opening 16 ends and all of Fehring’s end wins netted him just one-shot returns. With five ends remaining Weeks led by 16 shots and despite losing four of those to the Echuca skip he remained a 22-10 victor.
Tim Quinlan’s grand final day started in brilliant fashion, wins on the five opening ends giving him an 8-0 lead.
Ian Whiting cut the lead to six with wins on four of the next six ends, but then dropped 10 shots in the next four ends to trail by 14 with six ends remaining.
Whiting won five of those six ends, but the end he lost was disastrous and allowed the Rochester skip to pick up five shots on his 11th end win of the match for a 25-12 lead.
The 20th end was a one-shot haul for Echuca and with the team trailing by nine overall the 21st end was abandoned and Rochester awarded the 2021-22 division two premiership.
