Warramunda is embarking on a major capital works program in its residential care facility to increase capacity to 79 beds and refurbish and modernise other residential, common and administration areas.
The aged care facility successfully applied for $1.5 million in funding and 28 new bed allocations under the 2016 aged care approvals funding round and $999,900 from the 2015 national stronger regions fund.
Mr Drum’s visit marked the beginning of phase one of the four-stage project.
The first phase at Saunders St will see construction of a 22-bed aged care residential wing on a cleared adjoining block.
The extension will provide two respite care bedrooms and 20 dementia care bedrooms.
This will provide accommodation for the anticipated increasing proportion of dementia residents in the wake of the new government home care policy and the increased acuity of residents
Mr Drum said aged care was a critical part of the Kyabram and district community.
“It’s important for people to be able to spend their final few years in their community,” he said.
“We know demand is going to increase and we need to deal with it so people are able to stay local with family and friends as they get older.
“The local community have an emotional attachment to aged care so it is important we fund aged care facilities like Warramunda.”
Warramunda chief executive Sandi Websdale said she was pleased to see the hard work planning the redevelopment finally coming to fruition.
“This allows us to employ more people and reaffirm ourselves to the Kyabram and district community,” she said.
“We’re very excited to see the expansion and have all the planning the dedicated staff have done finally pay off.”
