Mulwala went into Saturday’s clash with Moama in need of a win after three consecutive losses against other top tier Murray League teams.
The return of Clarke, Barnes and Moylan freed up from the lockdown restrictions added some important height and class around the ball. It also offset the loss of skipper Jackson Gash who has been one of the best performers throughout the year.
The starts have been an issue for Mulwala seniors, so the focus early was to hit the scoreboard and keep the ball locked in the forward fifty.
The forward pressure was excellent from the start with goals resulting from the great work of the Mulwala small forwards. Matt McLachlan and Tanner Nyholm were working hard at the fall of the ball with Tanner stepping up to slot a goal and get the scoring under way.
Through the middle of the ground Butts, Johns, Crossley, Wilson and Dow were in everything winning the contested ball off the stoppages and driving it deep into the forward fifty.
The pressure was constantly on the Moama defence which enabled Mulwala to build a handy lead during the first term. They were getting opportunities off the contested ruck work of Jack Barnes and then the dominance of Jack Sutherland when he moved into the centre.
At the other end of the ground Beau Clarke was pulling down crowd lifting contested marks to shut down Moama’s scoring opportunities.
Beau was teaming well with Josh Hammond and Tim Doyle who were winning the contested ball when it did hit the ground.
Mulwala’s back six were well drilled, shutting down all chances for Moama to build a score, not letting a goal through in the first half.
Mulwala had managed to build a handy lead by the long break and with Moama goalless it was a long way back for them to get into the contest in the second half.
Moama came out a much more determined unit after the long break, setting up man on man making free flowing play very difficult to achieve. It was very ugly football with multiple stoppages within the same section of the ground and neither team able to break clear.
The Mulwala key forwards in Cam Magher, Dylan McNamara and Jack Sutherland continued to present which created scoring opportunities in a contest that had become a real arm wrestle.
Bodhi Butts, Harry Crossley and Tom Down were in everything, winning the contested and their quality use of the ball enabled Mulwala to add another four majors for the term.
Down the defensive end Beau Clarke continued to pull down marks at will making Moama’s task of scoring all the more difficult.
Beau was able to feed the ball to the run of Doyle, Hammond, and Taylor to break the lines and turn defence into attack.
Conner Phibbs came into the game after the long break as the sub player with his leg speed and determination to win the one-on-one contests lifting Mulwala.
Scoring had become difficult with Moama playing one loose behind the ball, but Mulwala were still able to conjure up opportunities.
Zach Scott stood tall under a high ball marking under extreme pressure from two much taller Moama back men. He then composed himself to slot the set shot from just inside the fifty.
Mulwala needed to get back on the winners list and they were able to collect the points that will keep them in touch with the top of the table.
The Mulwala backline lead by Clarke, Hammond and Doyle functioned well all day to minimise Moama’s scoring opportunities and set up many of Mulwala’s attacking moves.
In the end Mulwala came away with a much-needed win that will give them confidence in the coming weeks.
Next week the Lions take on the Cats at home in what is once again a must win game.
Interestingly due to the changes to the draw because of the latest COVID shut down in Victoria Mulwala will then travel to Finley to play them at home the following week.
It would be great to see all the Lions supporters get behind the team’s next round.

Mulwala Netball
A Grade
Mulwala 34 defeated by Moama 47.
The first quarter the young Lionesses worked hard and were only narrowly behind by 2 goals. Hollie, Tess and Indi moved well in the attack end and broke through the strong defence of Moama.
As the game progressed there was some really strong patches of play but not enough to put the girls in front.
Leah finished strong, shooting lots of goals and Tess showed aggression and drive over the four quarters and deserved the best on court.
The girls are hungry for a win. Bring on next week.

After a month off netball the girls were keen to get back out on the court. This was the game for the girls to prove to themselves the last meeting against Moama was not just luck. Each of the 9 girls put in their all for the game and the final score demonstrated this.
Such a great game demonstrating the strength of the team. Piper found her spot under the ring and demanded the ball scoring at every opportunity.
Paige fed the ball in and scored when opportunities presented. For Abbey it was the best game she has played for the season, swinging from C to WD to WA.
Brooke presented all game, directing play and Emme supported her goalers.
Jemma intercepted through the mid court, providing the Lions with numerous scoring opportunities.
Freya found her groove in GK, dominating the goal circle and limiting Moama’s scoring opportunities.
Maya was asked at ¾ time to take the WA out of the game, and she did just that. Fantastic job limiting their path to goal.
And Emma stepped in GK and put the pressure on Moama.
The awards went to Emme Gittins, Piper Poll, Abbey Mathews and Brooke Bigger.
