THE Echuca-Moama Salvation Army has launched its annual Red Shield Appeal, but not in the way you've seen it in the past.
At an event on Sunday, May 16, the team celebrated the beginning of its biggest yearly fundraiser with an afternoon tea.
After having to go virtual last year due to COVID-19, Echuca-Moama Salvation Army Auxiliary-Lieutenant Sonia Edwards said that didn't stop the community supporting the cause.
“Last year, through the generous support of the community during the Red Shield Appeal, we were able to commence a small food bank, purchase food vouchers for Christmas lunch and purchase Christmas gifts for underprivileged teenagers,” she said.
Money raised from this year’s appeal, which will run throughout May, will help fulfil the army’s vision to have a purpose-built facility for social services ministries, where the Emergency Relief program and food bank will be housed.
While the team is still unable to doorknock in person this year, there will be plenty of opportunities to donate around town.
Donations can be taken to tables at locations outside Aldi and Tattslotto in Hare St on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays with a ‘Tap and Go’ facility available.
The Salvation Army Hall will also be open Monday and Tuesday from 9am until noon and 2pm to 4pm, and the Thrift Shop will be open for its usual hours.
