Golf was a rather insignificant hurdle for the motivated sportsmen and women as 30-plus degree heat made the 72-hole event a challenging task.
Anyone who has played 18 holes knows just how challenging the game can be, physically and mentally, so the group received support from Cancer Council Victoria’s Catherine Goodall and Simon Burton to say thanks.
Ms Goodall is the community programs co-ordinator and Mr Burton is the community operations administrator, the pair having visited Deniliquin Golf Club earlier in the day and their final port of call was the Cobram Barooga Golf Club.
Mr Burton said the Longest Day fundraising event was gaining significant momentum alongside other projects, such as Daffodil Day and Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea.
Ms Goodall said being in the “melanoma capital of the world” it was important for people to be sun smart and aware of the dangers of spending time unportected in the sun.
The pair came bearing gifts, in the form of sunscreen and ice cold water, which were more than welcome as the five groups made their way around the course for a third time.
With a 6am tee off time applying for the day there was plenty of banter, one group in particular enjoying quite a successful opening two rounds.
Matt Jean and Jess Cox paired up, while Aaron Stevens and Lisa Drysdale were alongside them for the 72-hole challenge.
Matt is off a handicap of plus two and had opening rounds of two over (72) and two under (68) when The Riv camera caught up with him halfway through the third round.
Aaron, who is off seven, was equally as impressive with rounds of 76 and 78.
Some of the other groups were not as forthcoming with their statistics, but the Moama Steamers had plenty to offer when quizzed about their fundraising exploits.
The Steamers had passed the $8000 mark earlier in the day, team member Kevin Anderson raising $1000 in the last few hours before the team teed off to start the challenge.
Participants were Fiona Simpson, Marcia Spiers, Matt Ferguson and Matthew Veitch; Kevin Anderson, Stuart White, Liam Fleming and Luke Carter; Matt Jean, Jess Cox, Lisa Drysdale and Aaron Stevens, and finally, the pairing of Cheryl Ashworth and Jan Ammakis.
