Lawn’s experienced duo Wendy Hogan and Robert Voss were by far their best and Kim Brown and Andrew ‘whispers’ Lindner weren’t far behind. Every loss is a step closer to victory as this week it proved to be true, as Chiltern recorded their first victory for the season against Corowa Blue. This week the tables were turned as Chiltern’s men shone like a beacon and carried the Chiltern team to victory, in the past it had been the women who provided the impetus for their team. Corowa Blue were missing a couple of stars but you can only play what the opposition turn up with and Chiltern did that successfully. Chiltern have been on the end of some big defeats this season and this win will taste so sweet and the celebrations continued well into the night. Jarrod McKinnar and Rhys Trethowan lead the way for Chiltern and were ably supported by Sally Invanku and Samantha Bennett. Corowa were short on for bright lights but Marianne and Zali Spencer never stopped trying while Anne Rhodes and Craig Sandral added some finishing touches to the scoreboard late.
Section 2 - The long awaited class of the Section 2 titans Myrrhee and Everton didn’t quite live up the hype due to weather and missing players from both teams, which meant it wasn’t a true indication of what should have been. Myrrhee managed to jump clear early winning the first three sets and as expected Everton hit back with a couple of their own but then the game was turned on its head when Myrrhee won the next two sets easily (8-1) which effectively killed the match as a contest.
From that point Myrrhee put the que in the rack and cruised through the remaining sets to record an impressive win. Myrrhee have confirmed their favouritism for the Section 2 flag after Saturday and it would appear only injury or unavailability will stop them from winning and overcoming the heart break of recent years. Everton on the other hand have quite a few players to return and can’t be dismissed as a threat. Dylan Van Berlo and Robyn Oliver won three sets for Myrrhee and Di griffin, Peter Allen and Melissa Pinn chipped in with a couple of sets. The oldest player in Section 2 shouldered the load for Everton and Graeme Gibb showed his team mates what persistence can achieve (three sets), Ruth Kneebone and Alan Wood were also consistent performers for Everton.
Section 3 - The surprise result of Section 3 came when Wahgunyah Blue (Adan Corcoran, Jesse Johnstone, Mareeta Corcoroan, Ethan Palmer) beat top team Wahgunyah Red (Shaun Moore, Wayne Johnstone, Peter Trebely, Tye Callow). This match ebbed and flowed all day with one team looking the winner then the other would manage to regain composure and put themselves back in the frame for the win. Blue had all the answers when it mattered and Blue’s Adam Corocoran proved the difference
between the teams, his intelligent use of angles and consistent power hitting was too much to handle for Red. Tye Callow was always trying to drag his Red team mates back into the contest and was best for Red. Rutherglen Blue (Brady Hofer, Maddy Pianto, Sarah White, James White) are making a late charge for the finals with an impressive dispaly against Wooragee (Ali Maher, Jack Chambeyron, Annika Knoth, Mark Knoth). Brady Hofer was the mainstay of the Rutherglen outfit and continues to improve as season progresses and Sarah White was her usual consistent self. Jack Chambeyron and Annika Knoth were Wooragee’s best. Wahgunyah South (Jake Saville, Priscilla Hill, Corey Hill, Amanda Hemphill) and
Wahgunyah United (Glen Bobbins, Brodie Molnar, Rob Hill, Matt Davis) played out a thrilling draw on Saturday. Bragging rights for the South Corowa Reserve were up for grabs on Saturday and still we have no decision. The match was in the balance right from the start with sets being split and with two sets to play to match was all square. United’s Glen and Rob managed to hang on and win a tense and keenly contested set 8-7 (8-6 tiebreak) which meant that the match would be decided by the last set. As the set drew towards the end nerves became a factor and easy shots started to fly out back and it would take an ounce of luck one way or the other to provide a winner. South’s Priscilla and Amanda prevailed 11-9 in the tie break to level the scores. Brodie Molnar was best for United and Amanda Hemphill best for South.
