ClubMulwala Outdoor Bowls
Tuesday, January 18 – Midweek Pennant – Round 7
Hold tight - we’re checking permissions before loading more content
Division A1 – ClubMulwala 55 (2) lost to Benalla 64 (12)
A hard-fought game which ClubMulwala let slip out of their grasp late in the day against a team who came to win.
Only one rink up and another being defeated by 14 shots is not going to win many games; although scores do not always tell the full story.
Benalla played exceptionally well as a side and deserved their win.
Results as follows:
Kay Smith, Graeme Arnold, Daryl Richmond and Stephen McPhee 21 defeated Ian Hobson, Ted Armstrong, Kath Nunan and Karen Nicholls 14.
Daryl Dighton, Peter Humphreys, Malcolm Miller and Kim Lefevre 18 lost to Kerri Leask, Graeme Greene, Yvonne Capp and Lorna Armstrong 20.
Mick Millsom, Eugene Hodson, Kerry Merrett and Bev Norwood 16 lost to Peter Brock, David Lindsay, Richard Baulch and Brendan Rettke 30.
Ladder Position – 5.
Division B1 – ClubMulwala 41 (0) lost to Wareena Park 91 (14)
A day to put behind the club quickly and not think of the conditions under which this particular game was played. This team has been performing well and still remain on top of the ladder albeit by the narrowest of margins.
Results as follows:
Barry Pitt, Wayne Dowsey, Anita Albert and Wade McPherson 19 lost to Terry Kirby, Jim Lamb, Betty Dean and Anna Allan 22.
Loris Lochhead, Sam Smith, Betty Richmond and Judy Laughlin 4 lost to Jan Nugent, Alice Dobson, Val Bussell and Neil Reid 45.
Cliff Morton, Graham Albert, Phil Norwood and 18 lost to Walter Brett, Noel Nugent, Lola Clarke and Naome Thorburn 24.
Ladder Position – 1.
Division B2 – ClubMulwala 45 (2) lost to Beechworth 61 (12)
A huge struggle by this side to even put a team on the green. Not by lack of enthusiasm by those who participate however ClubMulwala are in a position where numbers are scarce because of the time of year with holidays.
The devastation of the past couple of years caused by COVID and personnel wanting to visit their families (and who can blame them) and because of COVID itself and the restrictions it can put on players.
Still, those that continue to put themselves out there should be proud of their efforts this week.
People are playing in unfamiliar positions and first year players have had to step up. It was a terrific effort.
Results as follows:
Jodi Powell, Ray Tovey, John Lefevre and Pam Lefevre 16 defeated Simon Kelly, Ian Murray, Ted Holman and Keith McIntosh 15.
Frank Exton, Doug Chessum, Nichole McPherson and Russell Cook 12 lost to Ethan Piddington, Tony Chambeyron, Joan Chambeyron and Christine Leentjes 22.
Faye Cook, Joan Connor, Carmen Mangan and Laurie Leary 17 lost to Barry Fitzpatrick, Lesley Smart, Michael O’Flaherty and Gina Fry 24.
Ladder Position – 7.
Saturday, January 22 – Weekend Pennant– Round 8
Division A3 – ClubMulwala 66 (4) lost to Wodonga 74 (14)
Two rinks up and two down. Many would think that this is one of those games that got away when the result could quite easily have been reversed. Sometimes the opposition just play better bowls even though you have not played that bad and they deserve their win and you just have to cop it on the chin. Well done Wodonga.
Results as follows:
Gary Parker, Graeme Arnold, Daryl Richmond and Anita Albert 7 lost to Tony Smedley, Bruce Owen, Brett Barton and Bill Miller 25.
Mick Millsom, Kerry Merrett, Betty Richmond and Stephen McPhee 15 lost to Phillip Sharp, James Sharp, Don Driver and Margaret Vlacci 21.
Peter Humphreys, Eugene Hodson, Bev Norwood and Graham Albert 22 defeated Maxine Bounader, Paul Smyth, Garry Eastlake and Elaine Gilby 13.
Daryl Dighton, Kim Lefevre, Malcolm Miller and Judy Laughlin 22 defeated Darren Miller, John Hodson, Russell Telford and Geoffrey Bath 15.
Ladder Position – 5.
Division B2 – ClubMulwala 64 (12) defeated St James 49 (2)
When the bus arrived back from St James there were some very excited players happy to come home with the win. This team is putting in the hard yards every week and are now starting to get the results they deserve.
A good win over St James now puts them in third place on the ladder and a chance at the finals if they keep this enthusiasm up.
It should also be stated that several members of the B2 team were seconded to the A3’s to replace players who were away. Great effort by all.
Results as follows:
Sam Smith, Ray Tovey, Laurie Leary and Russell Cook 18 lost to Ken Smith, John Nicholson, Janice McClure and Patricia Lonie 21.
Loris Lochhead, Wayne Dowsey, Jan Martin and Frank Exton 26 defeated Kylie Hooper, Colin Hooper, Neil Lonie and Lois Beggs 12.
Faye Cook, Joan Connor, Doug Chessum and Jodi Powell 20 defeated Gavin Fear, Michael Johnson, Thomas Edwards and Neil Greaves 16.
Ladder Position – 3.
Division B3 - ClubMulwala 0 (0) lost to Beechworth 10 (14)
Once again this game had to be forfeited to Beechworth. Once again ClubMulwala are in the position where, on the books, they have the players; however because of the time of the year and COVID they do not have the numbers to field a team.

YMGCR Bowls
Well what a round of Saturday Pennant. YMGCR had the lot from a last bowl heroics to a 5mm measure to win the game.
The A1’s playing at home against archrival Wodonga for 2nd on the ladder; this was the first time the teams had met this year and everyone was eager to see where they stood with the heavy weights.
YMGCR led for most of the day only to relinquish the lead on the second last end. With Spencer’s rink having to play his last end, Les stepped onto the mat with his last bowl and things were grim. One down on the big board and Wodonga holding 4 shots with a resting toucher.
The big fellow played the bowl of his life. With a perfect draw shot he sat the resting toucher and moved the jack back a foot to get 3 shoots. Game set and match.
His teammates erupted with excitement and maybe there was a brief thought of chairing him off, but wiser heads prevailed and they settled for a pat on the back. Final scores were YMGCR 14/74 to 4/72.
The stars of the day belong to Scotty Widdison who won 25/12, on one end the poor Wodonga players didn’t know what happened when Scott played his bowl and he followed it down to the head only to be joined by his lead Gary ‘Shadow’ Presnell right behind him.
Spencers last bowl “shot of the century” also gave his rink a win 19/18, Jimmy Lefevre had a tough battle all day only going down17/20 and Szabo rink went down 13/22.
A2’s travelled to Wodonga who were 2nd on the ladder (YMGCR were 4th) and after a tight game all day scores were locked on 69 a piece after the 83th end.
With 3 ends to play, Wodonga led 67/65. Robbie Lidgewood rink had a tough day and on their last end Kinnane picked up the jack to go from 5 down to 4 up.
Wodonga’s skip then stepped up with his last bowl and drew the shot...BUGGAR.
Over on Brown’s rink YMGCR was holding 2 and the Wodonga’s skip played a little runner and split the shot bowls for a single shot. That left it to Smithy’s rink who dominated all day and needed a 4 for YMGCR to draw.
After the front end put YMGCR in the game, Laureen played a magnificent bowl to draw another for at least a 4. This time the Wodonga skipper missed and the 3rds took bowls out 1,2,3,4 and went for a measure for number 5, just failing by 5mm’s.
But to walk away with a draw at Wodonga was very satisfying. YMGCR don’t get many wins there so this should give the team a lot of self-belief.
Laureen Smith’s rink played beautifully all day and won 30/10. Ray Brown’s rink had a tight game all day and won 17/13; Cat’s rink was well down early but fought their way back for a respectable loss 14/19 and Lidgerwood lost 8/27.
A4’s played Rutherglen at ClubMulwala and won 4/77 to 4/74. Best rink of the day was Bobby Evans who won 26/16 and they got great support from Rob Hummel rink who won 25/16 and in a rare happening Ian Morffew lost 13/20 and Marie Whitehead lost 13/22.
This still keeps them in touch of the 4, sitting 6th.
B2’s played Yarrawonga away and put on mighty effort to go down 4/59 to 10/68.
Terry Matthews rink handled the conditions well and won 23/12. Lil Borwick playing her first game as skip got a gutsy win 20/19 and Billy Butterworth lost 16/37.
The selectors had a tough battle on Friday to put all the teams on the greens and thanks to Dennis Miles and Edna James for helping out.
Midweek Pennant had the A1’s travel to Wangaratta in a top of the table battle and YMGCR came out on top winning 14/64 to 0/44 and this now puts them 2 games clear.
With YMGCR having 2 force changes losing Anne Miles from skip and Mick Szabo from a 3rd Stuart McNeill FINALLY had a chance in the top side and he played Wangaratta’s unbeaten skip and came away with a great win 25/17.
Spencer got a new 3rd in Ray Irvine but the star of the rink was Laureen Smith and they won 20/12. Garry Sanders was always in control (even dealing with YMGCR’s newest “Wrong Bias” person in Greg Green) and they won 19/15.
A2’s travelled to Benalla winning 12/72 to 2/57 and this now puts them top of the ladder.
Ray Brown’s rink started slowly but after the 5th end they powered away to win 31/15.
Bob Evans rink had a good win but had a scare when skip Evans was hanging over the fence ...not to well, they won 25 to 21.
Well done Doddy for taking over the skipper’s roll to bring the rink home. After losing 2 skips in a matter of hours big Al Goudge got the nodded and the rink played well just going down 16/21.
A3’s played Benalla at home and put on a mighty showing just going down 2/59 to 12/61.
Marie Whitehead rink had great game winning 24/12, Danny McNeill was in a tight game all day going down 17/21 and Les Balfour losing 18/28. They are now 5th on the ladder.
B1’s played Yarra at home and lost 2/45 to 12/69. Judy Goudge stepped up to skip and she won 20/19. Mary Essex lost 11/23 and Ross Lloyd lost 14/27.
Wednesday night saw the final of the YMGCR Men’s Singles final between 2-time winner in Andy Lefevre and new boy Ken Widdison who has won many club championships over his long career. With both players playing outstanding bowls Ken got out to a 10/3 lead but Lefevre just kept putting good bowls in the head and clawed his way back to go to a 17/16 lead Andy then picked up a 4 and he went on to win 25/17.
It was a great game of bowls and the quality was up to a championship final.
Wednesday Social bowls had 12 players. The winners were Col Withers and Bill Butterworth and the runners up were Garry Hart and Peter Lidgerwood. Jackpot failed to go off.
On Sunday at ClubMulwala, YMGCR Bowls had the O&M Men’s and Ladies Single Semi and Finals. Claire Sanders got put out in the Semi while husband Garry made to the final and was in a tight battle when he was a couple of shots down and he played a brilliant bowl only have his bowl just drop into the ditch and dropped a 4.
Well done Garry; he always does his club proud by producing the goods in the big games.
Next Friday will see the final of the YMGCR Ladies Singles played between two top guns in Anne Miles and Laureen Smith. Game starts at 10am.
This week, the winners of “RINK OF THE WEEK” are Laureen Smith, Sue Middleton, Tony Durkin and Rhonda Irvine.
The club had a bad week because we lost 3 members, Alan “Rowdy “ Hayes. Alan was a very quiet guy but boy he was a very good bowler and a great man.
Also, we lost past president in John Banger and another old member in Mal Hastie.
To the family’s, the YMGCR ‘s club President and Committee and members like to send our condolences to all the families.
Yarrawonga Bowls
Congratulations to Evelyn Calder on getting to the Semi Final of the Ovens and Murray Ladies State Singles.
Evelyn played Cheryl Lewis from Myrtleford on the ClubMulwala greens.
It was a great game with Evelyn going down by just 2 shots. Kobie was unfortunately knocked out in the 3rd round at the same venue. Well done to both.
Mick Dixon and Heath Ashton played in the Ovens and Murray State Novice Singles at Rutherglen last Sunday.
Mick won his 1st round and was beaten in the 2nd.
Heath had a bye in the 1st round and was beaten in the 2nd It was great to see them enter this event.
