The Australian share market has closed firmly higher, extending momentum from the previous session on the back of gains in energy, mining and utility stocks.

The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index closed 57.6 points, or 0.86 per cent higher, at 6,763.6 on Tuesday.

The broader All Ordinaries rose 59.8 points, or 0.87 per cent, at 6,953.4.

Solid gains in the energy and materials sectors, thanks to a rebound in commodities prices, helped offset weakness in financial, technology and consumer related stocks.

Meanwhile, the Australian dollar was range-bound, buying 69.48 US cents at 1620 AEST compared to 69.39 US cents at Monday's close.
