“When I was 12 or 13, I realised that my crooked little kid’s teeth weren't straightening out,” Dr Victoria said.
“By getting braces, it really turned my confidence around. I was like, that is what I want to do for other people.”
At Campaspe Dental Care, Dr Victoria has identified a worrying pattern of mothers putting their dental health on hold.
“I think the one thing I hear from many mums is, ‘Oh, I haven’t had a dental appointment since I had my oldest child and they are eight now,’” she said.
The clinic actively supports expectant and new mothers in maintaining their dental health.
“When we do know that somebody is planning to have children or they are pregnant, we would say to still come in for your check up,” Dr Victoria said.
“And you are more than welcome to bring in your little ones to help introduce them to having their teeth checked and a visit to the dentist.”
She points out that pregnancy’s hormonal shifts can markedly affect oral health.
“A lot of women say, that I am flossing my teeth at the moment and my gums are bleeding,” Dr Victoria said.
“It is normal for your gums to bleed a little bit more as long as it is not physically hurting you.”
Dr Victoria stresses fundamental dental care practices for all women, no matter their stage of life.
“Brushing twice a day and flossing is the crux of it. Make sure when you go to the dentist, ask them to show you how to floss,” she said.
Oral Health Victoria confirms that routine dental care during pregnancy is safe, though certain procedures should be postponed in the first trimester.
The organisation highlights the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene, noting links between gum disease and complications like premature births and low birth weight babies.
The health advice from Oral Health Victoria for pregnant women includes:
- Your growing baby’s calcium demands are high, so you should increase your calcium consumption to compensate. Eat calcium-enriched foods such as dairy or soy alternatives.
- Eat a nutritious diet every day, including fruits, vegetables, grains, beans and lean meats.
- Try not to eat too many sweet foods.
