The proposed UPbicycle Kyabram Program aims to improve community health, participation, and independence by building practical skills among young people living with disability. Responding to the lack of accessible, hands-on training options in regional areas, the initiative will also support disengaged youth who benefit from structured learning and real-world activities.
Through this innovative bicycle recycling and refurbishment program, participants will gain confidence, connection, and purpose by restoring donated bicycles. Guided by an experienced facilitator, each session teaches essential skills including bike repair, maintenance, problem-solving, teamwork, and safe workshop practices. The program draws on a proven delivery model already achieving strong outcomes through VIVID’s Echuca-based UPbicycle initiative.
Once refurbished, the bicycles will be distributed to individuals and families experiencing transport disadvantage—creating a powerful cycle of community benefit. Affordable, reliable transport can dramatically improve access to education, work, social activities, and essential services, making each restored bike far more than just a mode of travel.
By supporting the repair and reuse of donated bikes, the project also promotes environmental sustainability and reduces waste—aligning with community values across the region.
If funded, the UPbicycle Kyabram Program will help foster job-readiness, increased independence, and meaningful inclusion for participants. It represents a practical pathway to improved physical and mental wellbeing, empowering individuals while strengthening the broader Kyabram community.
