Held annually, the Bicycle Network-supported initiative aims to encourage more students to get physically active on their journey to and from school.
More than 350,000 students are expected to cycle or walk to school as part of the Australia-wide event.
“National Ride2School Day is the perfect opportunity to kick-start new healthy habits and promote the many benefits of active travel,” Mayor Charlie Gillingham said.
“Bike riding is a great way for our young people to practise the important road safety messages — Stop, Look, Listen, Think — and is a fun and convenient way to get around our rural communities.
“Walking can be just as much fun, as students catch up with family and friends along the way.”
The Ride2School program is encouraging schools across Australia to raise funds for World Bicycle Relief to support students in need in developing countries.
“For every $195 raised, a family living in a rural community in a developing country will receive a specially designed bicycle, providing life-changing outcomes,” Cr Gillingham said.
“Schools that register to participate in National Ride2School Day will also be in the running to win one of 10 bike pump and tool kit prize packs.
“Council encourages all students and their families to leave the car at home and instead get some exercise by cycling, walking or even scooting to school or the school bus stop on March 19.”
