Joined by students from Lockington, Rochester and Numurkah, the students took it in turns presenting in the impromptu and written speech components.
The program is managed and supported by Lions Australia and run by Lions Clubs in each of their 19 districts in close collaboration with, and supported by, participating schools.
Echuca Lions Club secretary John Simson said events such as these were a good chance for students to show off their public speaking skills.
“The aim of the program is designed to foster, encourage and develop leadership qualities of our youth, in conjunction with other citizenship qualities, at the age when they are about to enter the fields of higher education or employment,” he said.
“It provides the youth of Australia with the incentive to pay greater attention to the general qualities that are so vital in their development as first-class citizens.
“The qualities sought, apart from academic attainments, are those of leadership, personality, sportsmanship, public speaking and good citizenship.”
The judges said all students gave an excellent presentation; however, Hamish was judged the best overall contestant and best public speaker.
“Echuca Lions was proud to have Hamish represent us at the next level of the competition that was held at Numurkah at the end of March,” Mr Simson said.
Hamish was successful and took out the public speaking category on the night.
