According to an RACV price investigation released on August 13, Kyabram is one of only a handful of regional addresses faring worse than Melbourne city, sitting at 148.9 cents per litre(cpl).
Ararat is the only other regional postcode consistently more expensive that Kyabram at 150.9cpl.
For those looking at a cheaper alternative closer to home, your best bet is filling up if you're passing through Shepparton.
The same report found it is one of the cheaper places for unleaded petrol at 139.4cpl.
But at the border, it's almost as grim as in Kyabram; Echuca posts an average of 146.8cpl, the sixth most expensive regional price across the state.
To pick up a bargain at the state's cheapest bowser, head to either Benalla (131.7cpl) or Ballarat (137.5cpl).
Throughout the past six months, regional Victoria was cheaper on average than metro Melbourne, with an average price of 139.6cpl compared to 140.5cpl in the city.
"It shows that just by living in a different suburb it can cost you more in fuel," RACV's manager of vehicle engineering Michael Case said.
"At almost 10 cents a litre, that's $5 on a tank of fuel for an average family car. It adds up."
