Rural homes, lives likely to be threatened by bushfire

Crews were earlier on Monday working to control several bushfires across southern Tasmania in severe winds.

"These conditions may limit aerial firefighting operations and make ground containment more difficult," deputy regional chief Scott Vinen said. 

"The terrain and weather are challenging, with the fire danger rating high in these areas. 

"Our crews are focused on getting these fires under control and protecting the community." 

The emergency warning was issued for an area between Nugent Road, Bezzants Road and Crawlers Gully Road. About 100 people live in the Nugent area.

The blaze is expected to cause thick smoke and ember showers, the Tasmania Fire Service says.

A watch-and-act alert has been issued for a separate bushfire to the southeast at Kellevie.
