Swimmer who died in Tas from interstate

A young woman who died while swimming at a popular gorge in northern Tasmania was a 22-year-old from interstate.

Her body was found at Cataract Gorge in Launceston on Wednesday afternoon after she went missing while swimming with friends and family the previous day.

Tasmania Police confirmed her age and place of residence on Thursday. They are investigating the incident and a report is being prepared for the coroner.Â

A large-scale search, involving police, SES volunteers and members of community organisations, was conducted over two days.

The woman's body was found by police divers in a section of the gorge called First Basin, which is up to 20m deep.

Police have released no further information about her identify.

A water release was scheduled from Trevallyn Dam into the gorge between 10am and 4pm on Tuesday for a paddling event.

No links have been drawn between the release and the incident.

Signs at the gorge warn people that water levels may rise without notice.
