St Mary’s was formally declared a parish in 1875 and over the years has seen growth under the guidance of both Augustinian and Diocesan priests.
The celebrations began on Friday, May 23 with a meet-and-greet session open to all parishioners and guests.
On Saturday, a mini pilgrimage was held, starting at the Echuca Cemetery, where prayers were said for the past parishioners, Augustinian priests and Brigidine Sisters buried in Echuca.
The group then visited St Mary’s Parish for a history tour before wrapping up the pilgrimage at St Joseph’s College.
Guests once again reconvened at the St Mary’s Parish for a vigil led by Sandhurst Bishop Shane Mackinlay.
During the vigil, former minister for St Mary’s Echuca Father Peter Jones congratulated the parishioners on achieving the milestone.
“We congratulate you, the people of St Mary’s Parish Echuca on this wonderful anniversary,” he said.
“The focus is on yourselves, the people of Echuca, both those of you here present and every person who's belonged to this parish throughout the 150 years of its existence.
“Those of us who had the privilege of serving here for a period of time, we are conscious that it's you, the people of Echuca, who were at the centre of the reality that is the parish.”
Fr Jones also acknowledged the contribution of the Brigidine Sisters over the years.
As the vigil was coming to a close, Bishop Mackinlay was invited to unveil a commemorative plaque in honour of the milestone.
The plaque was also created in remembrance of those who built, nurtured and sustained the faith community in Echuca throughout generations.
Fr Lim took time to give thanks to the church community and those who had served the parish in the past.
“On behalf of our parish community, I extend heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you who help make tonight's Eucharist celebration such a special and meaningful moment in honour of the 150th anniversary of St Mary's Parish,” he said.
“But I also would like to thank especially the 150th anniversary committee in making this weekend... a success.”
After the vigil, guests gathered at the Moama Bowling Club to socialise at a two-course Gala Dinner.
Celebrations continued on Sunday with a well-attended family mass at the St Mary’s Primary School Brigidine Centre.
After the mass, parishioners and guests were invited to enjoy the parish carnival which was hosted on the school grounds, complete with plenty of food.
There was also lots of entertainment for the kids, including jumping castles, performances, face painting and live music.
