The pool could have returned to limited operations on June 1, however recent works to the pool will see it remain closed until July 1.
“While the recent announcement permits pools to open to 20 people from 1 June followed by indoor gyms from Monday, 22 June, the forced closure has allowed us to start essential safety works on the pool concourse,” chief executive Declan Moore said.
“The works are well progressed, however have uncovered additional essential works.”
“On opening, the pool, gym and group fitness room will also have restricted numbers in line with government guidelines.”
Triathlete Ryan Kervin said the news would be a major disappointment to many across the twin towns.
“It's definitely a shame,” he said.
“Most people were expecting it to reopen next week with the lifting of restrictions, so it's not great news. A lot of people have missed the pool, especially during the winter when there is no other option.
“It's a huge element for a lot of people's health and fitness that they have been missing, so it's a real shame that it has to stay closed for another month.”
Both Ryan and wife Michelle are regular triathlon competitors, with Ryan saying there has been no other genuine option.
“Swimming has basically been off,” he said.
“I've tried a few times in open water in the wetsuit but it's simply too cold for that. Plus with the added burden of home school you can't take as much time for an activity like that.
“Michelle would swim every lunch time during the week so she's lost that activity as well. Luckily at home we have indoor bikes and a treadmill, but not everyone has those kind of facilities so the pool becomes even more important for them.”
