Community members are also urged to continue to abide by social distancing measures, with some pharmacies seeing a reduction in patients presenting with coughs and colds as a result.
Echuca Amcal Pharmacy's Con Kostoglou said because people were social distancing, coughs and colds were not spreading like they normally did.
“As long as social or physical distancing continues, there will be a significant decrease in coughs, colds and flu,” he said.
However, if people are suffering from symptoms, they are advised to seek the advice of their community pharmacist.
“My best advice regarding managing coughs, colds and flu is to boost your immune system using products with vitamins, echinacea, antioxidants, zinc and probiotics in it,” he said.
“Speak to your pharmacist to find out what would suit your needs most.”
Health professionals recommend drinking plenty of fluids, as well as resting and eating a well-balanced diet containing a variety of fruit and vegetables.
Pharmacy Guild of Australia national president George Tambassis said it was also important to talk to your community pharmacist about any other medicines you may be taking.
“Some medicines can interact with each other and your pharmacist can advise if there is a possibility of this,” he said.
“They can also help to identify the best treatment for your particular need. There is no one-size-fits-all for coughs and colds and so you need to make sure you get the medicine that is right for you.”
