When the siren sounded for half-time, Moama looked well and truly on their way to winning the game against Deniliquin, but the Rams weren’t going to go down without a fight.
A stunning third quarter fightback saw them within three goals at the final change, but Moama had the last laugh on route to a 12-goal victory.
And coach Charlotte Long said she couldn’t be prouder of how her side won back the momentum.
“Obviously Deni wanted the game as much as we did, so it was about making sure we fought out the four quarters,” she said.
“I think we were very fortunate to change a few players around to help get the momentum back was key. Having good depth means we have been able to throw girls around if the game wasn’t going our way.
“Alex (Daly, Long’s other co-coach) and I have had a hard time trying to pick the team because everyone has stepped up their game at the most important time of the year.
“And that is what you want to see as a coach.”
When the Mowers did get back on top of Deniliquin, attacking duo Erin Moerenhout and Olivia Slattery were critical, scoring goals when the Rams threatened to run away with the game.
“We don’t envy their job at all,” Long said.
“They did an amazing job but I think they benefitted from the calmness with the way the ball was moved down the court. That gave them the confidence to make the most of their opportunities.”
Jemma Osborne was named the best player on the court.
