The Wonderland on the Murray event is set to bring the timeless classic Alice in Wonderland to life on the banks of the Murray River through life-sized sand sculptures created by Sandstorm Events.
Sandstorm Events owners Sharon and Peter Redmond were in town to craft miniature sculptures of the White Rabbit’s pocket watch and the Mad Hatter’s hat, giving visitors a chance to ask questions and see the process.
Mr Redmond worked on the miniatures on Thursday, October 23 and Friday, October 24, working from 8am until noon on both days to complete the works.
The White Rabbit’s pocket watch was stationed in the entrance of the Port of Echuca’s Information centre, while the Mad Hatter’s hat was housed in the port’s gift shop.
Mrs Redmond said the team was excited to be in Echuca in five weeks’ time to assemble the Wonderland on the Murray.
“We’re just really excited to be here. I can’t believe it’s five weeks until the first load of sand drops,” she said.
“We just hope that it does bring tourism into the region, and maybe it might even put the art of sand sculpture in front of people that have never seen it before.
“(It) is exciting for us as well because we just like to share our love of this art form with everyone.”

The Wonderland on the Murray trail is a joint initiative between Campaspe Shire Council, Murray River Council and Campaspe Port Enterprise, designed to transform public spaces into a family-friendly experience.
To bring the vision to life, Mr Redmond will be joined by major names in the sand sculpting world, including world champion Kevin Crawford, Jino Van Bruinsessen and Yves Geraedts.
While the miniature sculptures are impressive, the trail’s sculptures will be two to three metres tall and weigh 16 to 20 tonnes each.
They will be positioned throughout the Port of Echuca, and at the Aquatic Centre and the Moama Soundshell, inviting visitors to journey alongside Alice as she ventures into Wonderland.
Visitors can look forward to seeing favourites such as the Caterpillar, Cheshire Cat, White Rabbit, the Queen of Hearts and her card soldiers and Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum.
At the Moama Soundshell, visitors can finish the trail with Alice at the famed Tea Party, alongside more iconic characters.
The sand used will also be locally sourced from Rocksolid Gardening Supplies, following a successful trial with the miniature sculptures.
