The footpath will wind around one side of the lake, connecting to existing paths and allowing visitors more space to explore.
Friends of Moama Echuca Botanic Gardens Inc member Nancye Smith, who has been involved in with the botanic gardens since its inception, said the expansion was exciting.
“It’s just wonderful and it’s so important for Moama,” she said.
“With Moama going the way it is, spreading, it’s nearly the heart of Moama.
“It’s just so important with all the trees and everything because the houses that are built now don’t have much in the way of gardens.”
The botanic gardens began as a community idea to enhance the Recreation Reserve and is now regularly used by community members to exercise and relax.
With the area of the proposed path already being used by locals to walk around the lake, the committee agreed the footpath would be a welcome addition.
The committee reached out to the Moama Bowling Club around six months ago to pitch its idea and to seek possible funding.
Moama Bowling Club sales and marketing manager George Santos said the club was more than happy to assist.
“We believe in helping volunteers, especially looking at the time that this group gives to the community, it’s massive,” he said.
“Without volunteers, we just wouldn’t be functioning the way we do today, what you see around you is a testament to that.
“So we decided to go ahead and fund it. We were so pleased that we did because just looking at these ladies’ faces make it all worthwhile and hopefully the community will enjoy for many years to come.”
The path will be fully accessible, allowing wheelchair users to use the path and explore the full length of the gardens.
Construction of the footpath is set to begin in the next week and the path will be ready to use before the end of the year.
The committee hopes to secure more funding in the future to plant more gardens around the path.
