The continuing spell of extreme hot weather is playing havoc with organising events on the calendar.
On the previous Tuesday the women had to cancel their weekly social bowls due to the heat, while on Friday the round of midweek pennant was cancelled for the same reason.
The weekend pennant competition was completed in rather mild conditions, but unfortunately for our division two and four bowlers the heat was too much on the green and both sides failed in their respective clashes against Rich River.
Division two managed two rink wins in a disappointing two-shot loss, 59-61. (I. Johnson defeated R. Holmfield 30-11; G. Turner lost to H. Davies 11-35; J. Harris defeated K. Hewitt 18-15).
Division four could only grab one rink win in a 64-75 shot loss. (B Musgrove lost to V. Woods 18-33; N. Haines defeated J. Stuart 28-16; G. Shawcross lost to G. Edgar 18-26).
The team remains in third position on the CVBD premiership ladder.
The club will hold the popular mixed pairs Cunnington Cup on Sunday.
The starting time has been changed to 12 noon with 28 teams entered. Assembly is at 11.30am.
Due to the front green undergoing major renovations it will be out of action for four to five weeks, the event will be run consisting of two fills.
Fourteen teams will play the first game of eight ends, followed by the remaining 14 teams in the second fill.
The draw for the first fill sees: P. Broom, D. Galt, B. Smolenmaars, R. Bunting, S. Limbrick, K. Gillingham, B. Meighan, T. Hawley, K. Cox, T. Egan, K. Humbert and R. Gallagher.
The second fill: T. Rickard, R. Jones, W. Curnow, K. Hall, R. Neely, V. Wright, M. Clifford, G. Woodcock, K. Ingram, D. Thomas, M. MacRaild, P. Brock, B. Kinnane and A. Cowley.
With predicted high temperatures for the weekend, the club will decide during this week if the tournament will proceed. Bowlers will be notified.
The finals of the CVBD state fours were decided at the City of Echuca Bowling Club on Sunday in mild conditions.
In the first play-off, the Moama rink of Glenn Dorward, Jim Hogan, Barry Brennan and Kevin Brennan (skip) defeated their City of Echuca opposition comprising Steve Cunnington, George Thornley, Philip Thorn and Geoff Beattie (skip) 20-16.
In the final Moama lined up against another City of Echuca four in John Dinsdale, Ivan Hicks, Greg Page and Matt Liverton (skip).
In a tense battle, City of Echuca was holding two shots as the skippers crossed over. Moama skipper Brennan tried valiantly to remove the shot bowl, but narrowly missed the target with both bowls as the excited City of Echuca won the fours title 19-18.
The team will represent the CVBD in the regional play-off on Sunday February 10.
Lockington’s scheduled open fours tournament for the same day will be held at a later date, due to the renovation to the front green.
The Friday evening practice and dinner was well attended with Annette Brereton missing the lucky members draw.
