In division two Mathoura took on Rochester at Mathoura, and won 74-52. In division four, Mathoura took on City of Echuca at Mathoura and came away with a 73-55 win, while division five took on Moama Green at Moama, and were downed 35-57.

Ladder positions for Mathoura sees division one in sixth, division two in third, division four in second, and division five in seventh.

In Mathoura’s club championships, the second round of the men’s pairs saw A. and J. Hulm defeat D. Guthridge and J. Toomey.

The men’s B grade 21-up singles saw P. Clear defeat J. Dean; T. Starkey defeat C. Hillier; and G. Lumsden defeat D. Guthridge.

In the men’s 100-up handicap, S. Limbrick defeated M. Beeche; A. Murphy defeated A. Polak; C. Roberts defeated A. Prime; P. Clear defeated D. Murray; G. Lumsden defeated J. Hulm; R. Werner defeated D. Hicks and B. McMillan defeated L. Vallance.

The season is fast drawing to a close, so please keep your club games going.

Upcoming tournaments at Mathoura sees a men’s pairs taking place on the 28th, three games of 10 ends. Entry is $40 per team. Entries close 6pm, Tuesday the 26th.

Thursday, March 14 sees the Mathoura two-bowl triples, three games of 16 ends. Entry is $60 per team.

60 and over

ANOTHER sunny day greeted 112 bowlers at the Tongala Bowls Club. The greens were running well and bowlers were having a great time trying to draw to the kitty.

A couple of players entered the ‘wrong bias club’ today. At the end of play there was three three-game winners with the runners-up a team from Lockington of R. Shawcross, G. Turner, R. Hanson and skip I. Johnson.

The winners were from Tongala, the team of F. Vanderburgt, I. Tinning, K. Tinning and skip B. Campbell. Next week we are playing at the Moama Bowls Club on our anniversary day starting at 10am.

Lockington Bowls Club

THE women had a good roll up for their weekly social bowls where Denise Gilmore and Phylis MacFarlane (skip) were the dominant team.

The round of pennant in the CVBD resulted in more favourable success stories as both divisions in the CVBD weekend pennant competition won their respective matches against Tongala at home, with five out of six winning rinks.

The women played second-placed Elmore combination at home and suffered a 56-70 shot loss.

In the weekend pennant, division two defeated Tongala 96-65 with two rinks up. This morale-boosting victory has allowed the team to leave the cellar-dweller position on the premiership ladder.

The division four team scored a sound victory over Tongala with all rinks up and all recording emphatic wins. Currently the team lies in third position behind Moama and Mathoura.

In an upset result on Saturday, Moama was defeated by Rich River by 20 shots, which reduces the points difference on the ladder with only two games remaining.

In club competitions, Ken Main defeated Geoff Shawcross in a round of the 100-up championship, while Ray Hanson proved too consistent for Dave Thomas.

On the local tournament scene, several teams played in the popular Elmore Bowling Club mixed pairs event. The ecstatic winners were the husband and wife pair of Neil and Annie Haines, announced to tremendous applause.

On Sunday, the regional play-off in the men’s and ladies’ triples and fours championships were held at the Bendigo Bowling Club in ideal conditions.

The CVBD was able to share the overall results with the Elmore women winning the fours while the Rochester men won the triples. The Elmore team comprising Ina Heywood, Lorna Wilson, Ann Williams, Evelyn Locke (skip) proved too superior for their Golden Square opponents.

After gaining an early lead the Locky skipped rink was able to hold their opponents at bay to win 22-14 and will represent the region at the state championships to be held at Bendigo East Bowls Club in April.

The men’s triples provided an electric atmosphere as the Rochester trio comprising Cameron Keenan, Ashley Vesty and David Keenan (skip) tackled a strong Eaglehawk team.

After a long battle, the Rochester trio celebrated a determined and strong victory 20-19, and will head to the state championships.

City of Echuca’s team failed to match their opponents in the fours play-off against the strong Brad Marron composite team.

Their opponents were able to reduce or take the shot bowl out, and won the match 22-10.

The ladies triples was a near replica of the men’s fours as Marilyn Stephenson, Mary-Anne Spizer and skipper Sandra Connolly faced off against a Golden Square trio, and nabbed the match 21-14 after a short battle.

Friday’s evening meal was well attended with club secretary Neil Haines winning the lucky members draw.

Rich River

THE previous Tuesday saw the first and second round of the 100-up played, therefore no social bowls was held.

On that day, social bowls was played and the winners were Pat Sehestedt, Marg Young, Joy Kelly and Stephanie Shine. Runners-up were Liz Easter, Eileen Pineo, Carol Guille and Marg Kirk.

On Monday, February 18 at 2pm a general meeting will be held upstairs in the Tahlia room.

Midweek pennant will be having its end of season dinner in the bistro on March 1, all are welcome.

On the last day of weekend pennant, February 16 before the finals, a dinner is to be held at Rich River Bistro — everyone welcome.

The Villawood ladies fours tournament is being held on Wednesday, February 27, entries to Marg Young 0407 799 537.

Twilight bowls for all members for three weeks, starting on Sunday, March 17, no need for a partner as the format will be scroungers and staying on for a bistro meal if wished. Time to be confirmed.

Senior citizens

RESULTS for indoor bowls in the previous week saw winners in Tony O’Dwyer (skip), Hazel O’Dwyer and Dot Brennan.

Runners-up were Elaine Murphy (skip), Joan Parker, Joan Harris.

Moama RSL

INDOOR bowls from the previous Monday saw 29 players compete three games of seven ends.

Winners on 45 points were Roy Prigg (skip), Myrle Clancy and Jean Shelley. Runners-up with 42 points were Margaret Green (skip), Heather Smith, Isobel Wallis and Pat Benson.

Consolation prizes went to Denise Lee, Ron Stranger, Shirley Bridgewater and Liz Portwine.

City of Echuca

THE City of Echuca division one side scored another one-shot win in Friday’s round of midweek pennant.

Playing at Mathoura, the side only had one winning rink in a narrow victory. Roma Opie, Michelle Cunnington, Lynn Brown and Norma Hall won their game by 14 shots.

Division two competed against Moama and lost overall by 24 shots, with one winning rink. Helen Pitts, Marie Malone, Elaine Thomas and Jan Cowley won their game by nine shots. Division three had the bye last Friday.

All three sides will feature in semi-final matches this week. Division one will play Moama at Rich River, while division two play Elmore at Rochester and division three play Moama also at Rochester.

The weekend division one side lost by a single shot against Deniliquin. Leading all day, the Echuca side could not quite hold on to their lead and Deniliquin finished better to grab the important victory.

Division two had two winning rinks in an 18-shot win over Deniliquin. Jim Ferrier, Steve McCartney, Tony Deenen and Carlie Taylor won their game by 14 shots in the encounter.

Division three defeated Elmore by eight shots, and also had two winning rinks. Michelle Cunnington, Rhonda Gallagher, Trevor Rickard and Bill Toll had a 10-shot win in this match.

The division four side competed against Mathoura, and could only manage one winning rink in their 18-shot loss.

John Blair, Don Hicks, Bluey Charman and Daryl LaVelle won their game by five shots. The division five match against Elmore was close.

Both games were close at the end of the day, but Elmore had the winning edge, gaining victory by three shots.

Bowls results from around the club saw twilight triples on February 4 won by Neil Dovaston, Kevin Bursell and Steve Nolan, while Linda Ormando, Robyn Tooley and Dick North settled for second.

Ladies social bowls from February 5 saw winners in Sandra Glasser, Helen Pitts and Patti Taylor.

Men’s pairs from Thursday had Rob Anset and Joe Greco winning, with Ivan Hicks and Dennis Portwine settling for second.
