THE coronavirus outbreak has revealed some of the uglier sides of people with stockpiling, fights in supermarkets and racism, but now Echuca Moama is showing that community spirit is alive and well.
Local woman Kelly Jones was discussing with her family how difficult it was to buy their usual groceries with empty shelves and low stock in supermarkets.
“It’s difficult enough for us and we’re able bodied and have a car to drive there, so imagine how this might be for elderly people, especially with the warnings about coronavirus on the news all the time,” she said.
“I thought I’d go to the supermarket a few times during the week at 8:30am and while I’m going I could get something for someone else who can’t or doesn’t want to leave the house.”
She posted on the Facebook group Echuca Moama New Buy Swap and Sell and within an hour she had 30 people saying they were willing to do the same - and the shopping buddy idea was born.
For people who feel unsafe leaving the house or can't get to the supermarket, these people are here to help.
While they’re still ironing out the details of how it will all work, its clear to see there are many people willing to help those who are currently struggling.
If you need some help with picking up some grocery or pharmacy items, message Kelly through her Facebook post or call her husband Dwayne on 0430 356 637 and they’ll organise for one the volunteers to help you.
