Long-time local player and experienced coach Jon Varcoe will lead Echuca’s two women’s teams this season, in what is only the second year of the Goulburn Murray Cricket Senior Women’s competition.
Echuca will field an A and B grade teams and is thrilled to have recruited the knowledge and experience of Varcoe, who has Level 2 coaching credentials, and brings a wealth of cricketing knowledge from senior coaching positions at ECC, Cooma and Kyabram Fire Brigade.
ECC Girls and Women’s Coordinator Christy O’Brien said the club is thrilled to have Varcoe on-board to help the ever-growing number of players develop as individuals and also build a sustainable model for the club moving forward.
“In our first season we had a lot of fun - which was important - but we all want to continue to improve as players,” she said.
“And if we don’t focus on the development of players we will lose some of our women, as it’s a big commitment away from family and (for some) their kids’ sport to both train and play each week.
“Last year’s competition was not for premiership points, however there was a very clear competitive element and hunger for knowledge and experience from the players, and it was evident that we needed to call on the support of an experienced coach to help us to improve our game moving forward.
“We have total faith that a coach of Jon’s calibre will provide both the technical aspects and game day tactics we require to improve as cricketers and take our club to the next level.
Varcoe, who also has experience as a GMC board member and president, is excited to be involved at the grass roots level of girls and women’s cricket and is impressed by the passion and enthusiasm of all involved.
“I am impressed by the thirst for knowledge from the women, which is at a different level from the men, who have played for many years,” Varcoe said.
“I am passionate about supporting and assisting the growth and development of women’s cricket in a practical way and will be drawing on my many years’ experience coaching both cricket and football.”
