The Echuca Fire Brigade junior competition team took to Stawell on March 22 and 23 for the CFA and Volunteer Fire Brigades Association State Firefighter Championships, and they didn’t come back empty-handed.
The juniors made history, claiming their first-ever championship title in a breakthrough moment for the brigade.
Team coach Jordan Simpson said the win was a special moment for the team.
“It has been a long time coming,” Jordan said.
“We have been training twice a week since the start of October, so the kids have really put in the hard work, and they get to come home with the trophy.
“This is also the first year it’s been further away from home, so we all got to travel and stay together down there, which was really fun.
“All the kids get along really well so that makes the win even more special — getting to do it with your best friends.”
The tournament consisted of timed demonstrations and drills using a range of traditional and modern-day firefighting equipment.
Echuca toppled five-time defending champion Melton CFA, relegating the powerhouse team to second place, while Grovedale claimed third.
Just a week earlier, Echuca hosted its own tournament at Victoria Park, building momentum for its championship run.
