The regional sitting not only gives residents an insight into the inner workings of the parliamentary system but also provides parliamentarians with an excellent opportunity to connect with people from the region.
In 2023, Campaspe Shire Council applied to host the Legislative Council sitting in Echuca.
Campaspe Shire Mayor Rob Amos said it was an honour for Campaspe to be selected for the regional sitting and that it would be a fantastic way to showcase the municipality.
“We are thrilled that the Legislative Council is coming to Echuca as this allows members of parliament to connect with their regional constituents and better understand issues faced by rural communities,” he said.
The sitting will be held at Echuca Library and streamed live on parliament’s website. Members of the public will be able to attend and see how the Legislative Council works up close.
There will be other activities throughout the week for community members to engage in, including school visits, youth forums and committee hearings.
The Legislative Council has previously held regional sittings in Bright in 2021, Bendigo in 2012, Lakes Entrance in 2008, Colac in 2005, Benalla in 2002 and Ballarat in 2001.
To prepare for the sitting, Echuca Library will be closed from Saturday, April 13, before reopening on Saturday, April 20.
“As the Echuca Library will be closed for the sitting, we suggest you stock up on books early for that week or visit any of our other libraries or library depots around the shire,” Cr Amos said.
