Echuca-Moama tennis players star in Warrnambool

SEVERAL of Echuca-Moama’s finest tennis players have helped the Loddon Mallee team to a third-place finish at the Inter-Regional Country Championships.

Held earlier this month at the Warrnambool Lawn Tennis Club, the competition involved players from under 12s to the over 50s with the Barwon region finishing as the overall winner.

Isabella Crossman was in fine form across three separate divisions featuring in the under 18 female singles, doubles and mixed doubles.

As the fourth seed in the singles, Crossman dropped just four games on her way to a first-place finish.

She was able to cap off the tournament with a 6-0 6-0 win over Tegan Marshall.

Paired with Tiahna Leader in the doubles, Crossman and her teammate were able to overcome Jordyn Aitken and Tegan Marshall to earn points for Loddon Mallee.

In the mixed doubles, Crossman combined with fellow local Joshua Bavich to win her third trophy of the weekend.

The pair was able to get through a tie-break in their semi-final to earn a place in the final where they met another twin-towns local in Deagan Tomkins who played alongside Leader.

Bavich and Crossman would eventually win the match 5-3, 4-1.

Bavich and Tomkins would then form their own partnership to win the under 18 boys doubles.

Meanwhile, Phillipa Bush underlined her status as the number one seed in the under 14 girls singles.

Bush won all three of her matches in straight sets including the final against second seed Willow Barnett.

The pair would then put their rivalry aside to win the under 14 girls doubles while Bush was the runner-up in the mixed event.

Bush’s mum Celine would also produce a strong showing at the weekend as she finished as the runner-up in the women’s 50+ consolation singles.

Meanwhile, Leanne More would win the women’s 50 singles final in a walkover.

● EARLIER in the month, Isabella Crossman competed at the Goulburn Valley JT and AMT Championships held in Shepparton.
