Deniliquin won its section of the Edinburgh Shield competition at Corowa last weekend.

The club played against Rosebud, Hampton East, Corowa, Sale and Altona, with the Deni combination winning four of their five matches to take the title.

The Edinburgh Shield is an annual Victorian-based, RSL Sub-branch competition for ex-service personnel and their sub-branch descendants.

RSL Bowls Club president Tony Tonta said “it is always good to win the section”.

“We won last year and managed to sneak a win this year.

“It’s a good thing for the club to get a win and to play clubs all over Victoria.

“It was not all club members in the side, but sub-branch members, including four members of the Deni Bowling Club who were part of the 16-person team for a good weekend full of camaraderie.”

RSL hosted another sectional event on their own greens the same weekend, with Bendigo East victorious over six visiting teams.

The Deniliquin event included teams “from all over”, Tonta said.

“We had six teams visiting from as far as Colac and Geelong, which was great.“
