Deniliquin’s Andrew ‘Jaffas’ Jefferies has been recognised for his ongoing efforts in the environmental space, in particular relating to the Edward River.
He has received the 2025 Bill & Elwyn Hermiston Memorial Award, otherwise known as the Environmental Citizen of the Year,
The award was especially for his work with the Edward Kolety Fishing Challenge’s many river replenishment and care programs, including Murray Cod fingerling releases.
The fishing challenge is a catch and release event, ensuring all native species of fish are returned to the river immediately after being caught.
Additionally, all money raised from the challenge goes directly toward further replenishment projects and efforts.
At Sunday’s award presentation, Mr Jefferies was described as “a remarkable individual whose unwavering dedication to Deniliquin shines through his contributions as a local business owner and environmental advocate”.
“As the driving force behind the Edward Kolety Fishing Challenge, Andrew not only fosters community connection but also champions environmental sustainability by ensuring the responsible release of tens of thousands of fish back into the Edward River,” the assembled crowd was told.
“His commitment to preserving and improving the local ecosystem demonstrates true environmental stewardship, enriching both the natural beauty and community spirit of Deniliquin.
“Andrew’s passion and leadership make him a truly deserving recipient of the Environmental Citizen of the Year award.”
