Food for thought: Glanville Village cooking class a success

Tahnee Pfeiffer, the chef who runs the event, discussed the joy the class brings.

“I love interacting with the residents and getting to hear their stories. I get a lot of satisfaction from doing it,” she said.

“It gets the residents out of their rooms and talking; we are all deep in conversation by the end of the class.”

Ms Pfeiffer, a chef in the adjacent Echuca Regional Health facility, says the residents love the range of food.

“We cook a wide variety and try to revisit the residents’ era of food which include shortbread, scones and damper bread,” she said.

“They all have a bit of a sweet tooth, so the shortbread is always pretty popular.”

Brooke Thompson, who helps run the class, says it is a joyous event for the residents and the village.

“It’s a beneficial and important activity to have. There’s always a lot of laughter and reminiscing,” she said.

“It’s a fun environment where the residents are relaxed.”

They say the class is important for forging bonds within the village and learning wisdom from older generations.

“A lot of life is discussed within a meal; you learn a lot about their stories through the food,” Ms Pfeiffer said.
