Free safety kits for new blind and curtain cord standards

With new minimum standards for blind cord safety having come into effect last December, residents in the Euroa electorate are being encouraged to access free curtain and blind cord safety kits.

The new standards were put in place by the Victorian Government to protect children, with statistics revealing unsecured blind or curtain cords claim the lives of up to two Australian children every year.

It is now mandatory to secure internal window coverings with a cord guide or cleat fixed to a wall or structure.

The changes, which took effect on December 1, supersede exemptions in place for blinds installed before 2015.

All Victorian rental properties are now required to meet these safety standards for curtains or blinds, regardless of installation date.

State Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland is encouraging residents to take advantage of free blind safety kits available through Consumer Affairs Victoria.

“Unsecured blind and curtain cords are a serious safety risk and can have devastating consequences for young children,” Ms Cleeland said.

A free kit can be requested online at forms.consumer.vic.gov.au/cb

Ms Cleeland also encourages those who may not have internet access to visit her electorate office at 25 Bridge St, Benalla, where staff can help complete the request.
