For more than 20 years, the Yarrawonga Mulwala Rotary Club has financially supported kids across the region for them to become the best versions of themselves.
The annual Making a Difference camp in January builds confidence, social skills and a sense of community, while children enjoy activities such as kayaking, snorkelling, bushwalking, and the giant swing.
Suzi Willet said her daughter Sophie had benefited from her experience at this year’s camp.
“Sophie was a bit nervous heading into it, but came home confident and happy,” Suzi said.
“It’s given her the confidence she may not have had.
“She’s class captain now and speaks at different school events, which doesn’t seem to bother her.”
Noel Tinney has been the driving force behind the Rotary’s involvement in the program and said it was a great opportunity for all children aged between eight and 17.
“They get to experience time in a beach-side area and partake in activities with children they have never met before,” Noel said.
“When we see them coming home on the bus after the camp, they are a lot freer.
“They look more inclined to socialise with others and become an extension of themselves.”

In 1946, the site at Portsea transitioned from military use to a children’s camp, offering a safe haven for those in need of support.
For nearly 80 years, thousands of children have walked through the Portsea Camp, returning home with lifelong memories, experiences and friendships.
If you are interested in your child attending next year, or would like to help support a child to attend, contact Noel Tinney on jcntinney@gmail.com before Friday, August 29.
