The members gathered at the Stanhope Bowls Club for a night of laughter and reminiscing.
In 1969, with the help of the Kyabram Lions Club’s sponsorship, 27 Lions members joined forces to form the Stanhope Lions Club.
The numbers may have dwindled over the years, but president Avis Weller doesn’t believe much else has changed.
‘‘I’ve been president for almost 13 years and we’re still here for the community,’’ Avis said.
‘‘We give our time to those who need it. We want to raise money for so many organisations and put on a lot of sausage sizzles and give back as much as we can.
‘‘We may only have small numbers now, but that doesn’t mean we can’t do what we set out to do.’’
Avis said the only thing standing in their way now is their age.
‘‘We have a couple of members over the age of 80 and unfortunately we can’t do everything we used to be able to do,’’ she said. ‘‘We’re happy to donate and do little jobs where we can and we try our best.’’
The night, which saw 81 Lions past and present in attendance, was one of laughs and memories, but the club didn’t need big celebrations to make their night.
‘‘We didn’t do anything massive, we just wanted to get together with members past and present as well as other locals and have a good time,’’ she said. ‘‘It was just a great night.’’
Stanhope Lions Club is always looking for new members and anyone who is interested in joining can contact Avis on 0409 438 386.
