Before we go into this week’s match report we wish to alert you to two important changes to the 2020 syllabus.
Firstly, an additional match has been added to the program for Monday, March 16 at Parklands GC being a 4BBB event to tee off at 10am, assembly at 9.30 am.
Secondly, the scheduled event at Euroa on March 30 is also amended for a 9.30am assembly and 10am tee.
On Monday, March 2, we had a field of 121 players enjoy the mild weather, with a challenging wind, helping to keep the scores down.
There was a great field despite the early start, and I have never seen the registration queue so long at the deadline.
The course at Kialla was well presented despite the dry conditions with the surface soil cracks limited to the edge of the fairways.
As always, the hospitality was outstanding with a special thanks to the ladies who looked after us for morning tea and lunch, the bar staff, and the trophy sponsors, Kensingston Gardens.
A grade winner was Alan Dalton, Numurkah, on countback from Ray Coleman, Hill Top, with 36 stableford points.
With the new handicap system and the low slope rating this was a very swollen field.
B grade winner was Ray Gourlay, Kialla, with 35 points from Ron Dixon, Lockington, on 32.
The announcement of the winning scores in C grade lit up the eyes of a number of players as their prospect of winning a down-the line ball greatly improved.
Congratulations to Des Pentreath, Lockington and Ian Clarke, Kialla as winner and runner-up on 31.
Nearest the pin on the 11th hole, set at about 111 metres was Joel Watson, Rich River, in A grade; Howard Teasdale, Parkland in B grade and Tony Lasini, Parkland, best in C grade.
Ball run down included John Bray, Neville Larson, John McHale, Gary Bow, Tom McConchie, Peter Oddy, Rolf Weber, Shane Pollock, John Fuller, Ron Wilkinson, Ron Nicholls, Kevin Humbert, Jack Peacock, Tony Papallo, Leo Hartup, Brian Johnson, Les Hall, Keith Dougherty, Denis Prosser, Ian Campell, Tom Martin, Clyde Hammond, Bill Waite, Robert Frame, Brian Reiners, Bill Holyman, Bruce Whebell, Rex Howell, Tony Lasini and Lindsay Tatterson.
A nominal challenge including the four holes bordering the Honeysuckle Creek, hole numbers 10, 11, 16 and 17, was won by Roden Brady with an aggregate of 11 stableford points.
A special highlight of the day was the presentation of a framed “certificate of appreciation” to Jim Rae for his outstanding service to GVVGA in many leadership roles since joining in about 1992.
And happy 80th birthday to Max Dawber for Tuesday March 3.
Our next event will be a 4BBB at Parkland GC on Monday March 16, 9.30am assembly, 10am tee.
This event replaces the one lost to the club in January 2020.
Please also note that the Euroa meeting on March 30 now has a later assembly time of 9.30 am.
