Campaspe Highway Patrol Senior Constable Paul Swan said on foggy mornings, motorists should drive to the conditions.
“Ensure you definitely have your headlights on,” he said.
Sen Constable Swan urged people to ensure they used either low beam or fog lights, rather than parking lights.
“Parkers are pretty much useless in times like this,” he said.
He also warned motorists in newer cars not to rely on their auto headlights to turn on during fog, because the sensors in them did not recognise it as being dark.
“Auto headlights don’t activate in fog,” Sen Constable Swan said.
“It has a sensor and because there is glare, it thinks there’s light.
“Don’t assume your lights have turned on. You have to turn them on (manually).”
Sen Constable Swan also urged drivers to slow down if necessary.
“Drive at an appropriate speed to the conditions, because the roads are also wet,” he said.
He also suggested motorists try to avoid overtaking in foggy conditions because it was hard to see oncoming vehicles.
Motorists should also be careful when coming to crossroads, and make sure to look carefully for other vehicles, he said.
“Just because you have your headlights on, doesn’t mean others do.”
