Healthy lunchbox lessons

St Patrick’s Primary School and Tongala Primary School’s Grade five/six students had a healthy lunchbox session run by Echuca Regional Health and the Shire of Campaspe.

During the session students were taught and explored choices on how to build a healthy lunchbox.

Healthy Heart Victoria’s Melissa Mitchell, which is an initiative from the City of Greater Bendigo based in Campaspe, is involved in teaching the students and parents on how to have a healthy lunchbox.

“The program teaches the children what would constitute healthy lunchbox contents and how to put it together to make a balanced meal to bring to school that’ll give them the energy to concentrate” Ms Mitchell said.

“We chose the five/six students because of their level of engagement and commitment to the topic as they have been learning about it throughout the year.”

Students also made a healthy snack of ‘’Ants on a Log” which consisted of celery, cream cheese and sultanas.

Some of the kids had mixed reviews of the snack, but all students walked away with some helpful information about healthy lunchboxes.

In the parents session, they where taught about how to build a healthy lunchbox for their child and how to read nutrition labels on the back on products.
