Mother’s Day is all about celebrating our mums, so it seems fitting that the one weekend a year Day’s Mill opens its doors to the public is on that day.

Ann and William Day established the heritage-listed flour mill, homestead and farm outside of Murchison in the late 1850s.
As if that wasn’t a big enough handful, the hard-working pair also ran a bush sawmill and a punt over the Goulburn River, while Ann ran a local store.
In 1872, William died in a tragic accident and Ann was left to raise and support their seven children on her own. And she did so successfully, still managing to thrive in business in what was very much a man’s world.
Mother’s Day 2023 saw a large crowd of curious history-lovers wander through the grounds and buildings at Day’s Mill.

Ann’s descendants owned the property until the 1980s when Parks Victoria took over management.
Parks Victoria oversees numerous heritage locations throughout Victoria, such as the historic mill that ceased operations in the 1880s.
“Ann Day was a remarkable woman and a true pioneer,” Parks Victoria Senior Heritage adviser Dr Kim Wilson said.
“We’re really delighted to give everyone the chance to learn about her story and the history of the mill on May 12.”
Visitors can enjoy coffee and food for purchase on site, with Parks Victoria staff and volunteers on hand to share the site's history.
Usually only open by appointment for community groups, anyone is welcome to explore the site and its dwellings annually on Mother’s Day.
