Deniliquin Fire + Rescue were called to the River St home about 2.28pm.
Originally reported as a house fire, Captain Martin Smith said two trucks and six firefighters responded.
When firefighters arrived at the scene, there was a grass fire at the rear of the house.
It has also started to burn plastic netting and shade sales.
Capt Smith said this combination gave off a lot of black smoke, which gave the appearance of a house fire.
But he did say the fire got quite close to the home, because of the conditions.
The fire was stopped before then, due to the efforts from the firefighters and other onlookers.
The area of origin for the fire was near an electric pump, which is suspected to be the cause of the fire.
The risk of fires has been heightened this week due to hot and windy conditions, with cease harvest and an extreme fire danger day and total fire ban on Wednesday.
Capt Smith said everyone has done well in taking care despite conditions, but said the threat is not yet over.
He urged community members to remain vigilant, with similar conditions expected across the summer.
“In the coming weeks and months, people will have to take care, especially around the town and in the bush.
“The fuel load is quite dry at the moment so it is important to stay cautious.”
