On Friday, December 12, Kyabram born and raised operatic talent Charlotte Goode is bringing her troop of musically inclined friends to Kyabram for a night of Christmas-themed Opera in the Country.
Charlotte has been organising shows for the past few years, travelling to neighbouring towns such as Girgarre and Tatura and spreading the joy of opera and classical music.
This year, she is returning to her old stomping ground at the Plaza Theatre.
Growing up in Kyabram, Charlotte said she didn’t get to experience many live performances in her town beyond school musicals and the odd performance at the pub.
This experience inspired her Melbourne university studies in music and opera, driving her mission to bridge the classical music gap in regional communities.
With her will be an ensemble of gifted artists who will journey up the highway for this special performance, including accomplished singers, pianists, composers and double-bassists.
Charlotte said opportunities for young opera singers were few and far between, as many challenging, professional main role repertoires required a matured voice.
She said performances such as Opera in the Country provided a space for up-and-coming talent to shine on stage.
“Many opera singers are always looking for opportunities to perform and also are passionate about bringing it to new audiences and people that don’t get to experience it often … a lot of us in the industry are quite passionate about that,” Charlotte said.
Those who come to the show can expect a Christmas-themed repertoire, with classics such as O’ Holy Night and Angels We Have Heard on High, to modern favourites including Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and I’ll Be Home for Christmas.
Charlotte said the evening would cater to all tastes — from seasoned opera enthusiasts to those simply seeking an engaging Friday night experience.
“It’s just an opportunity to maybe see something that you haven’t seen before,” Charlotte said.
“And sure, you can travel to Melbourne and see it — but how often do you get the opportunity to see it in your home town?”
The performance begins at 6.30pm at the Kyabram Plaza Theatre, with tickets available at the door or online at operainthecountry.com.au/performances
