Victoria Police assisted with traffic control.
The incident is under investigation.
Echuca Fire Brigade captain Daniel Moylan emphasised the importance of working smoke alarms to save lives during emergencies.
He reminded residents to check their smoke alarms were working, with the change of season or daylight saving shift next month a good reminder to check.
“It’s a good time once again to make sure we have smoke alarms fitted within our residential homes or in any place that is worthy of it,” he said.
“Make sure they have a charged battery and do work.
“Go back to the old daylight savings (method) of making sure batteries are changed every six months.
“In this case, a working smoke alarm has saved possibly a life within that building.”
