There’s something rising in the kitchens at Cobram’s Hungie Fangs Artisan Bakery, and it’s not what you might expect.

This week, owners Lina Galati and Damien Gow are throwing their support behind Baking for Brain Cancer, a national fundraiser to support critical research.
“Reading about the statistics of brain cancer, it was such an eye-opener,” Lina said.
“Why wouldn’t you get behind it? It is a cancer that affects young children and adults under 40 years old, and there’s no cure for it.
“We went, ‘Why not? Let’s get behind it, and raise money.’”
The campaign is organised by Berwick-based baker Phil Dalton, whose wife, Tonie, was diagnosed with a highly aggressive type of brain cancer in April 2024.
All money raised by the Baking for Brain Cancer campaign will go towards research at The Brain Cancer Centre.
Lina and Damien know every little bit helps, and have come up with a few ways to raise contributions to the cause.
“Thursday is National Biscuit Day, and so for every packet of biscuits we’ll donate all the proceeds to The Brain Cancer Centre. And then Saturday the 31st is the big day,” Lina said.

“We’re going to do a deal, where if you buy any pie, or any slice, for 10 dollars, we will donate all proceeds.”
Lina and Damien don’t have a particular goal in mind. Instead, they’re hoping to raise as much as possible for the worthy cause.
“We’ve actually got a few customers who have brain cancer. And obviously, because there’s no cure for brain cancer, it’s a cancer that needs to be monitored for the rest of their lives,” Lina said.
“Any amount that we can put towards The Brain Cancer Centre is just enormous. It doesn’t matter how much we raise, [but] hopefully we can raise a bit. Let’s get behind the actual cause, and let’s help.”
