The competition, run by 2 Bent Rods, kicks off on April 3, and allows young anglers to fish anywhere in the country while competing for prizes and national recognition.
The competition was originally launched as the Queensland Kids Fishing Classic, and quickly gained popularity with families and junior anglers.
The strong response saw the competition expand nationally, allowing young fishers from across Australia to compete.
President of Corowa Anglers Club Rod Dunstan said while they don’t have a lot of junior members, competitions like this are a great way for young kids to get into the sport.
“We want more younger members, but a lot of families can’t afford it or don’t have the time with football and other sports,” Rod said.
“Competitions like this make it easier for kids to get into fishing.
“We run a similar competition, which we’re hoping to keep up every quarter, where kids can send in a photo of themselves with the fish they caught, and the best photo wins a prize.
“The prize last time was a fishing combo set with a tackle box and net worth more than $200.
“It didn’t have to be the biggest fish; it could’ve been a funny photo, it could’ve been a rotten old carp.
“As long as kids are fishing.”
Founder of 2 Bent Rods, Sam Beckmann, said the national competition aimed to inspire the next generation of anglers and encourage young people to spend more time fishing and enjoying nature.
“Fishing teaches patience, resilience and respect for our waterways,” Mr Beckmann said
“The Aussie Junior Fishing Classic encourages kids to step outside, explore their local waters and discover just how rewarding fishing can be.”
Young anglers who have taken part in previous competitions say the experience has helped build confidence and inspired them to spend more time fishing.
To get involved, simply download the 2 Bent Rods app, head out to your favourite fishing spot and submit photos of catches through the app.
The competition includes three age categories: 3-7 years; 8-12 years; and 13-17 years.
Young anglers can enter a range of common Australian species while learning about responsible fishing and caring for the environment.
