The ‘Women’s Walk and Talk, Campaspe’ initiative offers ladies a chance to enjoy some gentle exercise while socialising with other women in the community.
As part of Intereach’s Settlement Engagement and Transition Support program, the event especially encourages women from multicultural backgrounds who may be new to the area to take part.
Intereach multicultural services worker Amanda Sam said while the program was created with a multicultural audience in mind, all women were encouraged to attend.
“Any woman is welcome to join us. When we make events open to everyone, it gives us a chance to connect more widely, discover who is in our community and learn from each other,” she said.
“It would be great if women from all cultural backgrounds can come together because that’s how you build those friendships, language skills and connection.”
With the March for Australia demonstrations in the spotlight, Ms Sam added that the event was an opportunity to normalise multiculturalism.
“I think it’s so important that we can all walk side by side,” she said.
“If people don’t have the chance to meet others from different backgrounds, sometimes they can feel surprised or unsure when they do.
“This walk is about breaking down those barriers and helping everyone feel part of the community — not separated into silos.”
Through these sessions, Intereach can also help connect new community members to local services and offer assistance with school enrolments, booking doctor’s appointments or completing welfare applications.
Intereach can also let women know of local events happening in the area that may be of interest or connect them to other community groups based on women’s interests.
The program will run every second and fourth Tuesday of the month, with September’s sessions to be held on Tuesday, September 9 and Tuesday, September 23.
Participants will meet at the Echuca library from 10.30am before they set off together for a brief walk followed by morning tea.
